Merced Morning – Yosemite

The Merced River, in the central part of California, is a 145-mile  tributary of the San Joaquin River flowing from the Sierra Nevada. It is most well known for its swift and steep course through the southern part of Yosemite National Park and the world-famous Yosemite Valley. The river’s character changes dramatically once it reaches the foothills and the lowlands, becoming a slow-moving waterway meandering through irrigated fields.

This infrared image was captured at The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee Refuge Complex. It is composed of two national wildlife refuges in southeastern Florida. The refuge includes 145,800 acres of the northern Everglades habitat and has become my go-to place for peaceful serenity. The beauty of Infrared photography is that if you aren’t too excited about greeting the dawn or  waiting for sundown as is generally required with much of landscape photography, you can shoot when the sun is high in the sky which provides great opportunity.

Neutral Density Filters

Neutral Density Filters in a nutshell serve as sunglasses on your lens to reduce the amount of light entering your lens and thereby allow you to shoot with extended exposure times. You may want to do this, for instance, if you would like to create a motion-blur with a slow shutter speed as with the image above, giving you that creamy, soft texture of the sea.

These filters can be purchased individually or in combinations  with varying  opaque density. I am working with a three pack of filters by Tiffen. You can use an individual filter which screws over your lens, or stack them to provide additional opacity. There is a lot written on the subject and I won’t delve into that in this post, but two tips come readily to mind. You MUST use your tripod and you should experiment with varying shutter speeds, aperture settings and sensor sensitivity.

Night Photography Tip

Nighttime Photography Tip

Alabama Hills, California

Tools for Night Shooting

Fenix HL21 Headlamp

Low light Photography creates some extra challenges. One tip I learned the hard way is to have adequate lighting to set up and adjust your equipment. It sounds so basic, but if you shoot long enough, you are bound to make every mistake in the book. As I have mentioned in the past, preparation prior to going out into the field is a must. But recognizing that there is always more to do once you get out there is the essence of this recommendation. It seems so simple, but a standard flashlight will not free both hands up  (unless you place the flashlight in your mouth)!  Aha! Consider a headlamp!!!! They are relatively inexpensive (around $30.00), are light weight, take up little space, and are extremely effective. The light follows your eyes! I have had luck with a company called Fenix, but I am certain there are others out there.

The dawn shoot above was at The Alabama Hills, just outside Lonepine, California. It is near the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada in the Owens Valley. I was facing east (slightly to the south) which set up this silhouette with the morning sun’s rays coming from behind the image and slightly to the right.

Your Tripod – Wake up and Smell the Roses!

National Park Photography

Zabriskie Point at Dawn – Death Valley, California

I know. The tripod is a burden, takes extra time, just something else to do. Wake up and smell the roses! If you are serious about your photography, your tripod is a major asset and critical if you want to be the best that you can be. Of course there are times when it isn’t necessary, as in street photography. However, if you are shooting close up shots, the slightest shake can cause distortion. If you are in the field shooting landscapes, using a telephoto lens and waiting for the light, it is a must! Again, the camera becomes heavy with your long lens, and even with image stabilization, you will be unsuccessful. The above image was a dawn shot at Death Valley’s Zabriskie Point. When I first arrived, it was dark and cold. I set my camera on the tripod and waited for the right moment. I had time to review my settings and sat back for that golden moment.

Additional tip: Learn how to use your tripod and practice set-up before going out into the field. Time can be fleeting and you don’t need to be fussing around while it passes.

Your Camera and Bright Light Conditions

The beauty of Infrared photography is best brought out when the sun’s infrared rays are strongest. Typically, this is midday when the sun is at its brightest. Unfortunately, if you are shooting using live view, your LED will be difficult to see due to glare.

Though I rarely recommend various products, I encourage you take a look at Hoodman HoodLoupe Optical Viewfinder for 3.2″ LCD Displays and related products. It effectively blocks out the sun’s glare and allows you to have a clear view of your subject. Hoodman also has a rubber eye loop which fits over your viewfinder if you are hand-holding your camera and don’t use your LED.

Tips for Cold Weather Photography

A recent trip to Alaska caused me to revisit some basic tips when shooting in pretty extreme weather conditions. The temperature varied from near freezing to the low 80s and provided quite a challenge when it came to preparation for the trip. A few things you should keep in mind:

1. Camera Preparation: Consider your settings beforehand (to the best of your ability) and before you step outside. You don’t need to be fussing with your camera when you get out in the cold. Also, try to get your camera out in the cold for a significant period of time before you shoot. Otherwise, going from a warm lodge or car directly to the cold weather will cause condensation to form on your lenses and camera – not a pleasant thing.

2. Clothing: Layers of course, the conditions can change quickly and you’ll need to be ready. Gloves are a critical piece of the puzzle. There are some winter gloves available that allow you to remove the fingers which permit you to manipulate the camera when outdoors. I personally prefer using thin glove liners. When you are looking for subject matter or waiting for the light you can wear the glove shells and slip them off when ready to get to work.

3. Coming Indoors: Consider an airtight plastic bag for your camera to avoid condensation and remove your memory card as soon as possible for the same reason.

Happy Shooting!

Lost in the Sierras

I stumbled upon this quirky image in the prairies outside Bishop, California. The tires serve as a marker to a farm hidden back in the brush. Mountains from The Inyo National Forest serve as a backdrop and curiously mirror the contours of the tires.

For those who are unaware, the Inyo National Forest covers part of the eastern Sierra Nevada of California and the White Mountains of California and Nevada. The forest covers 1,903,381 acres and includes nine designated  wilderness areas which protect over 800,000 acres.

Home of the oldest living things on earth, The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is located about an hour east of Bishop, California in The White Mountains (elevations between 9,000 to 11,000 feet) and accessible via The Schulman Grove Visitor Center. These magnificent trees can range between well over 2,000 to 4,773 years old! Think about it! This was taken in October and the temperature was below freezing. If you plan to go, dress accordingly.

Our Elephants are Disappearing

A recent article  in The Washington Post by Darryl Fears is titled “Forest elephants are vanishing, and they might never recover from poaching.” It points out the startling decline in birthrate as well as the negative impact of poaching. I found it both saddening and alarming. This particular image was taken at The San Diego Zoo. Though I have been to East Africa (Tanzania and Kenya), this particular photo sticks with me.

Is there something we can do as individuals to stem the tide and protect these magnificent animals? I encourage your thoughts.

When Mother Nature Whispers in Your Ear

Glacial Silt runoff from Davidson Glacier, Alaska

Glacial Web

Hiking up to Davidson Glacier (see my prior Post), I was fixated on its natural majesty. Then Mother Nature whispered in my ear. “Fool! Look down and see what I have made for you.” And Sure enough. The Glacial silt runoff kept Mother Nature untied and undefeated.

Jordon Pond in Acadia National Park

Located near Bar Harbor, Maine, Jordan Pond is a glacier formed tarn with a maximum water depth of 150 feet. The water is exceptionally clear with an average visibility depth of 46 feet (14 m) but this has been measured as high as 60 feet (18 m), the most ever recorded in the State of Maine. If you go, you can grab a snack at the nearby Jordon Pond House. For those who have never visited the area, Acadia National Park is a stunning national treasure on the coast of Maine.

The Everglades National Park in Florida covers over 1,500,000 acres. This amazing ecosystem provides quite the photographic challenge and opportunity. Typically, the winter months are the most sane time to visit, due to the heat and thirsty mosquitos.

America’s Most Inaccessible National Park

If you think you have come to the end of the southernmost tip of the United States once you have reached Key West, think again. Seventy miles west out over the emerald waters of The Gulf of Mexico you will find The Dry Tortugas National Park. Fort Jefferson is the largest 19th Century coastal fort and is its central feature. Take a two hour plus boat ride from Key West or consider a sea plane. This is a unique adventure not to be easily forgotten.

Return from SabrinaA week in the Eastern Sierras has given me a greater resolve to preserve and promote the natural beauty our world has to offer. This magnificent moment was captured returning from Lake Sabrina in The Inyo National Park. Magnificent!
